Mahatma Gandhi Road popularly known as MG Road in Secunderabad has been a favorite shopping center for the people in the other part of Hyderabad. Right from morning to late evening when the businesses close shutters, the entire stretch from Paradise to Gandhi statue center and Ramgopalpet police station is always abuzz with shoppers and their vehicles.

Minister for Cinematography and Animal Husbandry, Sanath Nagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav along with Municipal Administration Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar visit MG Road area in Secunderabad on Thursday.
Minister for Cinematography and Animal Husbandry, Sanath Nagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav along with Municipal Administration Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar visit MG Road area in Secunderabad on Thursday.

Those who visited the place on weekends must have witnessed the difficult movement of people and vehicular traffic and especially, the trouble culminates in the parking area around the statue.

May be this center was sufficiently spaceous decades ago, but it is one of the most congested areas for a city like Hyderabad, as compared to the newly developed areas like Banjara Hills, Begumpet, Ameerpet, Kukatpally, etc. While the businesses thrive in these spaceous locations, people are scared of a trip to MG Road area and they will have plan for the parking of their vehicles much before they reach the spot.

In fact, any past memory of the place and the trouble finding a proper parking for vehicles is so repulsive that it could easily force people to cancel their shopping plans, at least at MG Road, and think of other places. “This is a clear example of civic infrastructure impacting, positively or negatively, the businesses in an area and its economic growth,” says P. Lakshman Gound, a senior Congress leader in Secunderabad.

Finally, the issue has caught to the government’s attention and the authorities are making plans to beautify the entire MG Road area.

State Minister for Cinematography and Animal Husbandry Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who represents Sanat Nagar Assembly constituency, under which falls Ramgopalpet division, visited the area giving some hope to the residents and business owners. He announced that a new Gandhi statue will be erected beside the existing one.

Municipal Administration Department Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar and other GHMC officials accompanied the minister.

The minister instructed the officials to remove transformers from the Gandhi statue parking area and bring into use the adjoining space for beautification.

The Zonal Commissioner Srinivas Reddy unveiled a master plan for the beatification and development of MG Road area. The minister said the plan will be implemented at the earliest.

DC Mukunda Reddy, Town Planning ACP Christopher, Water Works GM Ramana Reddy, Transco DE Sridhar, ex-corporators of the division Attili Aruna Goud and Kiranmayi and others were among those who accompanied Srinivas Yadav.
